Hi, I’m Alex Mercer — and I’ve Had IBS for as Long as I Can Remember

Welcome to Digestion FAQ. I’m glad you’re here, and I mean that genuinely — because if you’ve landed on this page, chances are you’re dealing with something that’s affecting your daily life more than most people around you realize. Digestive issues have a way of doing that.
A Little About Me
I’m not a doctor, a dietitian, or a nutritionist. I’m someone who has lived with IBS since childhood. It was the stomach aches that got me sent home from school, the school trips I sat out, the birthday parties where I had already worked out where the bathroom was before I took my coat off. For years nobody had a name for it. I was told I was anxious, or fussy, or that I would grow out of it. I didn’t grow out of it.
What changed wasn’t a diagnosis so much as a decision. Somewhere in my twenties I got tired of guessing and started reading properly — not wellness blogs, but the actual research. That’s now more than 12 years of reading clinical studies for fun on a Saturday, following gastroenterologists and microbiome researchers, and slowly building a mental map of what the evidence supports versus what’s just wellness-industry noise. My gut is far better managed than it used to be. It is not cured, and I don’t pretend otherwise.
I’m not a medical professional, and I’ll always be upfront about that — nothing here replaces your doctor. What I am is someone who needed these answers for himself, and who kept digging long after the worst of it settled down.
Helping Other People With This
Once you’ve lived with a gut like mine, other people find you. It started with a family member who spent nearly two years cycling through vague advice, expensive supplements and contradictory information from corners of the internet that had no business giving health guidance. Then friends. Then people in the IBS forums and support groups I’ve been part of for years, where the same questions come round again and again.
I’m not treating anyone and I’m not anyone’s practitioner — I’m the person who has already read the study they’re asking about, already tried the elimination diet, already wasted money on the supplement that was never going to work. Sharing what I’ve learned with people in the same situation is genuinely the most useful thing I do, and it’s why this site exists.
Why I Started This Site
Frustration, mostly. There is a wide gap between what the research actually shows and what people find when they type their symptoms into a search engine at midnight — which, if you have IBS, you have almost certainly done. Digestion FAQ exists to help close that gap: real, honest answers from someone who has done the homework and lived the problem, rather than a sales pitch dressed up as health advice.
What You’ll Find Here
This site covers the full landscape of digestive health — from common questions about bloating, constipation and acid reflux, to deeper dives into the gut microbiome, probiotic strains, prebiotic foods, and how your diet shapes your digestive wellbeing over time. Whether you’re newly diagnosed with IBS or simply trying to feel less sluggish after meals, there’s something here for you.
Every article starts with the peer-reviewed research. I’ll tell you what the evidence supports, where it’s still uncertain, and when something is popular but not yet proven — and I’ll always tell you when a symptom is one you should take to a doctor instead of a search bar. That last part matters more than anything else on this site.
My Approach
I only write about products and approaches I’ve personally used or researched thoroughly enough to stand behind. I have no interest in pushing a supplement because it’s trending. If something has a weak evidence base or a better alternative exists, I’ll say so plainly.
The Personal Part
Outside of reading too many studies for a hobby, I’m an enthusiastic — if occasionally mediocre — home cook based in the Pacific Northwest. I spend my weekends experimenting with fermented foods, hiking trails that require me to pack a very sensible lunch, and convincing skeptical friends that kimchi belongs on more things than they think. Gut health isn’t just this website’s topic. It’s how I’ve had to live since I was a kid.
Thanks for being here. I hope this site gives you the clarity and confidence to take real steps toward feeling better.
